Bruno Manser, an environmentalist and human rights activist born in Basel, Switzerland, disappeared on March 10, 2005, and is presumed dead; he was known for living with the Penan people in Sarawak, Malaysia, to advocate against deforestation and later founded the Bruno Manser Fonds in Basel.
