Augst is a municipality in the Bezirk Liestal, situated on a gravel terrace along the Ergolz River near the Rhine. At 267 meters above sea level, it is one of the lowest-lying communities in the canton, ranking 85th out of 86 in altitude. The municipality covers a total surface area of 165 hectares, placing it 81st in size. Table 2 summarizes the key features of the municipality, and figure 1 shows its location on the map.

Historically known as Baselaugst, the municipality is located on both sides of the Ergolz River, which flows into the Rhine, marking the border with Germany. It neighbors Pratteln to the west and Kaiseraugst to the east and includes a narrow strip of land along the Rhine housing the Augst-Wyhlen hydroelectric power plant. As of 2025, Augst has a population of 1,155 residents, ranking it 49th in the canton by size. Of these, 788 are Swiss citizens and 318 are foreigners, meaning foreigners make up 28.75% of the population, the 14th highest proportion in Baselland. The population includes 180 children (0-17 years), 692 working-age adults (18-65), and 283 older adults (over 65). There are 610 men and 545 women. The total surface area of 165 hectares is divided into 41.4% settlement area, 33.3% agricultural land, and 8.0% forest, with the remaining 17.3% classified as unproductive surface.

The municipality's tax revenue ranks 46th in the canton. Specific figures for tax revenue per adult capita and the municipal tax multiplier, along with their respective ranks among the 86 municipalities, are detailed in the accompanying financial tables.

In 2022, Augst's total energy consumption included 5,172 MWh of electricity, 5,439 MWh of natural gas, 6,980 MWh of heating oil, 1,430 MWh of wood, 97 MWh from thermal solar energy, and 383 MWh from ambient heat. Electricity consumption per capita was 4.8 MWh, ranking 18th lowest in the canton. This relatively low per capita figure can be influenced by the level of industrial activity in a community.

The vehicle stock in 2026 consisted of 758 passenger cars and delivery vans. Of these, 646 were powered by petrol, diesel, or other combustion engines, while 112 were electric vehicles, representing an electric vehicle share of 14.8%. This data is presented in table 3.

In 2024, the municipality's recycling performance showed variation across categories. Per capita recycling amounts were 19 kg for glass (rank 55), 51 kg for green waste (rank 69), 163 kg for household refuse and bulky waste (rank 10), 2 kg for plastics (rank 17), 14 kg for paper and cardboard (rank 64), and 2 kg for tinplate and aluminum (rank 16). With two categories—household refuse and bulky waste, and tinplate and aluminum—ranking within the top 20, Augst demonstrates strong performance in specific areas of waste management.
