Zunzgen is a municipality in the Bezirk Sissach, situated at an elevation of 401 meters above sea level and covering a total surface area of 686 hectares. Table 2 summarizes the key features of the municipality, and Figure 1 shows its location on the map.

Zunzgen is a municipality located in the Sissach district of the Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft. It lies in the Diegtertal valley along the Diegterbach river and is bordered by several other municipalities. The community is characterized by its notable landmark, the Büchel hill, which stands about 30 meters high. The local government consists of a council with seven voting members, and as of 2024, the municipality is led by President Hansruedi Wüthrich. As of 2025, Zunzgen has a population of 2,810, with 1,409 women and 1,401 men. The proportion of foreigners is 20.86 percent, while Swiss citizens make up the rest. The population is composed of 478 children (0-17 years), 1,676 working-age adults (18-65 years), and 656 older adults (over 65 years). The municipality ranks 24th in total population among the 86 municipalities of Baselland. Table 2 shows the population by age groups since 2005.

The municipality’s total surface of 686 hectares is divided into 12.4 percent settlement area, 37.3 percent agricultural area, and 50.1 percent forest, with only 0.1 percent unproductive surface.

Zunzgen’s tax revenue ranks 29th in the canton, and its tax revenue per adult capita is correspondingly positioned. The municipal tax multiplier and its rank among the 86 municipalities provide further context for its fiscal standing.

In 2022, Zunzgen’s energy consumption was dominated by heating oil at 12,237.82 MWh, followed by electricity at 7,975.99 MWh, environmental heat at 3,292.89 MWh, wood at 2,834.18 MWh, photovoltaics at 1,146.67 MWh, and thermal solar energy at 117.97 MWh. The municipality’s electricity consumption per capita is 2.9 MWh, ranking 65th among all municipalities in the canton. This relatively low per capita consumption may be influenced by the presence or absence of industrial activity, which can lead to higher electricity use in other communities.

As of 2026, Zunzgen has a total of 1,647 passenger cars and delivery vans. Of these, 1,397 are vehicles with combustion engines (mainly petrol and diesel), while 250 are electric vehicles, representing 15.2 percent of the total vehicle stock. In 2024, Zunzgen recycled a total of 13.0 kg per capita of glass, ranking 79th in the canton; 85.0 kg per capita of green waste, ranking 49th; 122.0 kg per capita of household waste and bulky waste, ranking 62nd; 2.0 kg per capita of plastics, ranking 17th; 22.0 kg per capita of paper and cardboard, ranking 50th; 1.0 kg per capita of other metals, ranking 39th; and 1.0 kg per capita of tinplate and aluminum, ranking 52nd.
