Street cleanliness in Basel is measured using a cleanliness index (CCI) that ranges from 0 to 5, based on video footage collected by cameras on street-sweeping vehicles. The Grand Council has set a target that the city-wide average cleanliness index must be at least 4.5, which represents a high standard of cleanliness.

In the most recent month, April 2026, a total of 126,543 individual measurements were recorded across 4,817 monitored street sections. The minimum cleanliness index recorded was 3.85, the maximum was 5.0, and the average was 4.74. Of all measurements, 90.2 percent were above the required threshold of 4.5, while 9.8 percent fell below it.

The top five districts with the highest average cleanliness index are not listed in the data, but the bottom five districts with the lowest average cleanliness index are also not specified. It is important to note that average cleanliness is only one way to rank districts; rankings can change when using alternative indicators, such as the percentage of measurements that exceed the 4.5 threshold. Detailed results for all districts are provided in tables 1 and 2.

Comparing the most recent month, April 2026, with the first month of available data, January 2024, shows clear improvement. In January 2024, 67.8 percent of measurements exceeded the 4.5 threshold, and 98.8 percent were rated as good (4.0 or higher). By April 2026, these figures had risen to 90.2 percent and 99.9 percent, respectively. This indicates that overall street cleanliness in Basel is improving over time, as shown in Figure 1.
