On May 12, 1856, the botanist Andreas Franz Wilhelm Schimper was born. He served as a Professor of Botany at the University of Basel starting in 1899, where he coined the term "tropical rainforest" and laid the groundwork for modern ecology. On May 12, 1889, Otto Frank was born. He was the father of Anne Frank and, after the war, moved to Basel, where he established the Anne Frank Foundation in 1963 and advocated for human rights until his death in 1980.
