Street cleanliness in Basel is measured using a cleanliness index from 0 to 5, which is calculated by analyzing video footage from street-sweeping vehicles. The Grand Council has set a target for the city to achieve an average cleanliness index of at least 4.5.

In June 2026, the city monitored 4,945 street sections and recorded 131,181 individual measurements. The cleanliness index values ranged from a minimum of 3.64 to a maximum of 5.0, with an average of 4.75. Of all measurements, 90.4 percent were above the required threshold of 4.5, while 9.6 percent fell below it.

While some districts and streets rank highest or lowest in average cleanliness, this is only one way to measure performance. Rankings can change when using alternative indicators, such as the percentage of measurements that exceed the 4.5 threshold. Detailed lists of the top five and bottom five streets and districts are provided in Tables 1 and 2.

Comparing the most recent month to earlier data shows clear improvement. In January 2024, 67.8 percent of measurements exceeded the 4.5 threshold, and 98.8 percent were rated as good, meaning 4.0 or higher. By June 2026, these figures had risen to 90.4 percent and 99.9 percent, respectively. This indicates that overall street cleanliness in Basel is improving over time.
