On August 12, 1905, Hans Urs von Balthasar was born. He was a prominent Swiss theologian and Catholic priest who, despite being born in Lucerne, developed a deep and lasting connection to Basel. He chose to serve there as a student chaplain rather than accept a professorship in Rome, and it was in Basel that he founded the Community of Saint John with Adrienne von Speyr and produced many of his major theological works.
