Ernst Carl Gerlach Stückelberg died on September 4, 1984. Born in Basel in 1905, he was a Swiss mathematician and physicist who made important contributions to theoretical physics, including the exchange particle model and the renormalization group. He studied and later worked at the University of Basel before moving to other Swiss institutions, and his legacy is commemorated with a street named after him at CERN.
