Matthäus Merian the Elder, born on September 22, 1593, was a Swiss engraver from the prominent Basel Merian family. Although he spent much of his career in Frankfurt, he returned to Basel and created detailed town plans, including one of Basel itself in 1615. His later work on the Topographia Germaniae series cemented his legacy in both engraving and publishing.
